A new cover will be unveiled on May 8 for the Aventura Directory, a phone book published yearly that lists residents and businesses in the city.

The cover for the 2000 edition will be done by artist Michael Israel. Company officials are keeping the work under wraps until the unveiling, from 10 a.m.-noon in the center court at the Aventura Mall, 19501 Biscayne Blvd.

“The publisher, Dennis Holober, is delighted with the cover that Michael has created,” said Susana Azpurua, an account executive for the Apple Organization, a public relations firm that is handling the Aventura Directory.

“We can’t say what it is, but his art will be worthy of a coffee table display,” Azpurua said.

Holober, an Aventura resident, has been publishing the directories for three years.

“It’s more like a resource guide than a traditional yellow pages,” Azpurua said. “In addition to phone numbers, the directory has fax lines and e-mail addresses.”

There also is a special section for government agencies, she said.

Israel was commissioned to do the cover based on his resume, which includes Absolut Florida billboards currently seen across the state and a bronze sculpture that sits in the lobby of the Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. Israel also created a mural that is across from the street from Loehman’s Fashion Plaza in Aventura.

As part of the unveiling, the Aventura Directory will sponsor an art contest for students at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School in Miami. Their entries will be displayed in the mall’s center court, along with Israel’s cover.

Students from the magnet school have been asked to submit drawings or paintings in any medium they choose with the theme, “What Aventura Means to Me.”

Judges will select four top designs, which will be featured in the directory. The first-place winner will also receive a $500 savings bond and a compact disc gift pack. Students in second through fourth place will get saving bonds ranging from $50 to $250 and compact disc gift packs.
